The Battle is not Yours

2 Chronicles 20:15-17

How do we fight when we see the enemy is so great? How do we let go and not fight when we feel we must?

A great multitude came against King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. Jehoshaphat called to the people to get serious with God and fast. Consider their sins and pray. This would reinforce their penitence and remind them of their weakness and need to depend on God.

The prayer had essential ingredients:
  • Committed the situation to God.
  • Acknowledged that only God could save them.
  • Sought God's favor.
  • Acknowledged God's sovereignty.
  • Praised God's glory.
  • Professed dependence upon God for deliverance.
  • We should focus on God's power and not our own.

As the enemy came at them:
  • God spoke through Jahaziel - be not afraid... for the battle is not yours, but God's

Every day we battle against:
  • Temptation
  • Pressure
  • Rulers of the darkness of this world
  • Ephesians 6:12, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
  • We have God's spirit within
  • If we ask Him when we face struggles, He will fight for us

How do we let God fight for us?
  • Realize the battle is not ours, but God's.
  • Recognize our limitations.
  • Allow God's strength to work through our fears and weaknesses.
  • Make sure we pursue God's interests, not ours.
  • Ask God for help with daily battles.
  • 2 Chronicles 32:7-8, Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
  • 1 Samuel 17: 45-47, Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
  • Exodus 14:13, And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
  • Psalm 5:11, But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

Where is the battle within your life?
  • Hebrews 13:5, Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
  • Ephesians 6:10, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
  • Matthew 28:20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
  • Romans 8:28, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
  • Psalms 27:1, The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
